Pavlov was a physiologist who was studying digestive processes in dogs. However his experiment was not working as his dogs would start to salivate prior to being given food. At first Pavlov thought his dogs might be psychic but then realized they were learning. The type of learning Pavlov discovered is called conditioned learning. It occurs when the subject associates a stimulus with something else. For example Pavlov's dogs learned that a bell meant that food was coming and elicited the salivary reflex. In order for the dogs to get this connection Pavlov had to ring the bell very close to the appearance of food; waiting too long between the unconditioned and the conditioned stimulus would not have caused learning of the connection. Humans can have their emotions conditioned. If two events happen close in time that cause an emotion then one could connect the wrong event with the emotions. How might this cause issues in a person's life?
