Question

The following information was gathered for the manufacture of a particular item. The item has A-H tasks. Below you can see the Tasks, their Immediate Followers (in this case note it is followers not predecessors) and the Time (Standard Time in minutes) for each task. You do NOT, however, need to draw the diagram to answer the questions. The purpose of this quiz is to show that possible cycle time (CT) isn't one number but is a range of numbers.

What is the shortest cycle time?

What is the level of output per hour will the shortest cycle time allow?

What is the longest cycle time?

What level of output will the longest cycle time allow?

Overall, how does cycle time affect output

  • Question

    What is the shortest cycle time?

    What is the level of output per hour will the shortest cycle time allow?

    What is the longest cycle time?

    What level of output will the longest cycle time allow?

    Overall, how does cycle time affect output

Explanation / Answer

Shortest cycle time = largest activity time of the task

Here, largest activity time is 1.0 minutes

Available time per hour = 60 minutes per hour

Output = Available time/ cycle time = 60/1.0 = 60 units per hour

Shortest cycle time = 1.0 minutes

Output level = 60 units per hour

Longest cycle time = total sum of activity times of task = 3.8 minutes

Available time per hour = 60 minutes per hour

Output = Available time/ cycle time = 60/3.8 = 15.8 units per hour

Longest cycle time = 3.8 minutes

Output level = 15.8 units per hour

As the cycle time increases the level output decreases.
