Market research is essential to any business, whether expanding into new markets or develops strategies to increase competitiveness in current markets. Soft and hard data are both useful in gaining further insight. However, each has its place in the market research process.

Benefits of soft market research data:

In Soft market research, data such a psychological response and emotions displayed towards the products might contribute a lot while formulating the marketing strategy. While gathering the soft market research data using focus groups and observation, we come to know what motivates the potential customer while making a purchase. This finding can be incorporated in various aspects in pricing, discounting, product features and packaging etc.

Soft marketing data is difficult to capture and analyze, but when captured successfully and understood properly, the advantages can be multifold in terms of revenue and customer loyalty.

Benefits of hard market research data:

Hard research relies on gathering numerical and demographic data, which helps determine who the organization's customers are and what they want, how much they want, and when or how they want the product or service.

Hard Data describes the types of data that are generated from devices and applications, such as phones, computers, sensors, smart meters, traffic monitoring systems, call detail records, bank transaction records, among others. This information can be measured, traced, and validated.

Most organizations today already use Hard Data for analysis, geo-location, predictions, and optimization and are now trying to differentiate themselves and add more value to their Hard Data applications for their customers.

When we need to quantify the data and check the numbers, past and present sales and buying trends of the customers then we use hard data. Whereas, when we need to analyze the psychological needs and factors of the customers, like their desires, likes and dislikes, and any other psychological quotient, then we use soft data.
