Question

How do the strategy and tactical execution of operations management within an organization with which you are familiar support or impede the high-level vision, mission, and/or goals of that organization?

For example, consider a company that designs and manufactures tractor engines. Its business strategy is to create a competitive advantage by leveraging its design expertise. If it insources the repair of its engines, this operational management strategy aligns with the high-level business competitive strategy because its design engineers will have constant and easy access to returned engines that are in need of repair. This will allow the design engineers to collaborate with repair engineers in the design of repair procedures and it will allow the design engineers to improve their designs based on direct observation of failures observed in engines returned from the field.

Explanation / Answer

Strategies or tactical execution play a crucial role in the operations management of a business and it supports the vision and mission of the business to achieve organizational objectives. The operations management involves managing the business resources to produce the products and services.

The company that I would refer here is a multinational publishing company. The company’s main objective is to publish scholarly journals and books that empower knowledge to the knowledgeable. Different types of journals such as scientific, health science and business journals are published for the benefit of the global scientific community. Strategies help to support this mission.

The mission of the publishing company is to publish high impact journals that have recognition and value for the scientific community. In order to support this mission, the strategy that the company uses is to recruit learned professionals with the science background. Journal Managers, Publishers and Publishing Editors have a sound background in science who contributes effectively to the scientific community. There is an in-house Publisher groups such as Publishing Support Managers (PSM) who are in direct contact to the society. This strategy makes the PSMs understand the inefficiencies in the society and suggest articles that improvise the community. This strategy had a great impact because the scientific community benefited a lot and the inefficiencies were removed to an extent. Thus, it is crucial to have strategies to support the mission, vision and goals of an organization.
