This learning activity is a continuation of the McDonald’s case study presented in Learning Plan 2 and also serves as an introduction to the process-flow analysis concepts presented in "this" learning plan. View the clip entitled "JIT at McDonlads" on the student companion website. As you watch the clip, answer the following questions:
1.) Why were the metal warming bins removed from McDonald’s restaurants?
2.) As an example of introducing new technology to speed up service to their customers, McDonald’s upgraded what key piece of equipment?
3.) This upgrade speeded up the specified process from ___ to ___ seconds.
Explanation / Answer
1. The metal warming bins got removed from McDonalds’ restaurant because of introduction of “made for you system” by McDonalds. Metal warming bins were very common in fast food industry because this technique helps to make the sandwiches in advance. Earlier McDonalds use to prepare sandwiches in advance but later they moved to new strategy in which they prepare sandwiches after customer order is placed. So, to fulfill the criteria for made for you system a rapid speed toaster was added to it which can toast bun in just 11 seconds.
2. An example of introducing new technology to speed up service to their customers, McDonald’s upgraded its traditional warming bins with rapid speed toaster which can toast the bread in 11 seconds only which was a revolutionary change in fast food industry. It also helped the company to remove advanced preparation of sandwiches and prepare it when order is placed by customer.
3. This upgrade speeded up the specified process from 30 to 11 seconds. Which helped them to make “made for you system” a successful initiative in fast food industry.
