You are fortunate to have the supervisor of shipping position at Microswift’s production facility in Taft. One of your employees, José, has been an excellent employee for the past 5 years. In the past two weeks, though, he has not seemed to be himself. He caused about $2,000 in damages in a forklift accident. He has also punched in late two times. When you discussed these incidents with him, he was very apologetic and claimed he was having car trouble. He is normally a very outgoing and fun loving employee, but now appears to be tired and edgy. He usually contributes at lot at every meeting, but he said little at yesterday’s safety meeting. During the afternoon break, Ziggy, another employee, made a joking comment about José’s favorite football team which had been badly beaten last weekend. José responded back with some foul language and then left the workbay. Another employee commented, “What’s been eating at José?” Everyone just shrugged their shoulders. You decide to have a coaching session with José. You find out he is working a second shift of 30 hours as a security officer to help with some financial problems he is having.

Describe your meeting with José. Show how you would use attending, affirming, resourcing, and reviewing in your session with him.

Explanation / Answer

Jose is a good man and certainly a good employee. It is good to know that he works extra hours as security officers to meet his financial obligations. However, as a supervisor of the unit, I need to maintain discipline, ethics and productive and effective work culture so all of us as a team deliver well.

I would go to Jose and personally approach him and call him to my office. The best way to make him open up and discussed about the current behavior and issues he is facing. Instead of speaking more or making him understand, I will try to understand from him as to what he think and what does he make out from that. Later I would make him aware of the facts about the damage he is creating to his professional and personal life and boost up his morale and motivate him to work in a good way that he has always done and that he shall not engage in unnecessary issues at workplace and instead focus on his job
