Question
Lots of controversy surrounds social media privacy issues. One of the thorniest involves Facebook profiles. On the table is this question: Should potential employers have the right to request applicants' passwords? Even if this particular question is resolved, others will follow. What do you think? Would you keep a separate work profile for Facebook or Twitter so that potential employers had less access to your personal information? Do you think it's appropriate for employers to ask for social media passwords? Why or why not?
Explanation / Answer
No. Nobody should have the right to request for applicant's passwords, since having passwords is not going to solve any purpose. If somebody has kept their profile public, any employer can see that and if somebody has kept their profile hidden, they definitely don't want anybody to see their profile. Also, in social media people post what mightnot be reflection of their original self. Hence judging based on these data for an applicants eligibility won't be the right thing to do.
If at all, it is seen that employers judge you based on social profile data, one might want to keep their personal identities hidden/separate. But in this case the very purpose of the social media won't be solved. Hence asking for passwords to social media profiles or judging based on your activity on social media is not appropriate.
