Question

Currently the clinic does 250 visits per week, with 50% of all visits as return visits. Each employee (physician, nurse, and receptionist) is scheduled to work 35 hours per week.

a. How many employees by type does the clinic currently need?

b. How many employees by type will the clinic need if it signs the contract for pre-employment physicals?

c. If return visits shift to 10% of all regular visits, how many employees by type will the clinic need with and without the contract for pre-employment physicals?

d. How will the answers to “b” and “c” change if the number of physicals is modified to 35 pre-employment physicals per week?

Explanation / Answer

a. The clinic currently need only 1 type of employees i.e. full time employees. The full time employees are physician, nurse and receptionist. It is assumed that the 50% return visits - i.e 125 visits require very less follow up time with doctor and so the entire load can be handled with the current staff strength.

b. Pre-employment physicals are conducted to evaluate whether an employee is fot for job or not. So, in this case the clinic will require an additional physician to conduct pre-employment physicals for the employees to be hired.

In this case the clinic can hire a physician as an outworker or a contractor who will perform the pre-employment physicals as and when the need arises.

c. If return visits = 10% of regular vists = 10% of 250 = 25. This means that first time visits = 250 - 25 = 175. These visits will require additioanl load on the physician as first time visits require more time per patient than return visits. In such a case the clinic can make use of a part-time physician in addition to the regular physician that is already there on the rolls. The outworker physician will be required if there is a contract for pre-employement physicals. So in such cases 3 types of employees are required - full time, part time, outworker.

In case when there is no contract for pre-employement physicals, then the outworker will not be required. So in such cases 2 types of employees are required - full time, part time.

d. (This question cannot be answered as the number of pre-employment physicals of 35 before modification is not given i.e what was the number before it was modified to 35).

d.
