Explanation / Answer
Name of the leader - Sundar Pichai
Title of the leader - CEO of Google
Name of the company and industry - Google, IT industry
Sundar Pichai was announced as the new CEO of Google, 2 days back. He demonstrates various traits and qualities of being an effective leader. Sundar has the following traits:
1. Sunder Pichai is a people's person. People gravitate towards him. He is genuinely likedand respected by his employees because of the gravitational pull that he commands over his employees. This is a very importnat trait of a leader. A leader who is perceived as not being a people's person, will never be liked by his employees.
2. Sunder takes hands on responsibility and does not shy away from taking extra responsibility. This is an essesntial trait of an effective leader. A leader is supposed to be a responsible and hard working person. Working hard and taking responsibility by the leader will send the message to employees to take their work seriously.
3. Sunder Pichai is humble and down to earth. This allows him to connect well with people accross all levels be it employees or vendors or channel partners.
Other leaders with similar traits are - 1. Douglas Conant, former CEO of Cambell soup.
Like Sundar, Douglas was a humble CEO who belived in building relationships and investing in people. People connected with him naturally, as a matter of fact.
2. John Lily, former CEO of Mozilla - John paid serious attention as to how he interacted with his employees. He was not loud and was perceived as an introvert.
3. William McKnight, president and chairman of 3M during the 1930s and 1940s. Like Sundar, William was a humble CEO. He was unassuming in his manner.
All successful leaders may not share the same traits. For example Richard Branson is the chairman of Virgin Group. He has an aggressive personality with a loud and colourful way of doing things. But he has been extremely successful.
Different leaders face different situations. A leader may be in charge of a profitable company and his situation is to sustain robust future growths. Another leader may be in charge of a company in the midst of a crisis with falling sales. His task at hand is to get the company back on growth track.
Situations can arise and develop depending on the environment, organization, culture, crisis and change. A leader has to behave differently when an environment is stable as opposed to the case when the environment is unstable. Different organizations have different culture and philosophy. They have an impact on leadership. Crisis situations also affect the effectiveness of leadership. For example very recently in India, Nestle was in a crisis due to high lead content in its Maggi instant noodles. There was a leadership failure to handle the crisis effectively and the CEO was removed from India. Change, they say, is the only constant. Change is done for the betterment of a company, for growth as well as survival. Studies have found that charismatic leaders are the best to introduce and implement change.
