Question

I am asking this question for a third time. The time It was answered, the answer pertained to legality as opposed to a math answer which is what this question is asking. Hopefully someone can help me with the formula and the calculation of what the question is asking. The second time, the expert suggested I use excel (linear) to answer it. I am not familiar with that function, and I believe there is another way to answer this question, without using linear function; hoping someone could assist.

A small grocery store needs the following nummber of cashiers during each day of a normal week for day (8 am to 4 pm) and evening (4 pm - 12 am) shifts. The stre prefers to employ full-time cashiers who work eight hours a day, five days a week, with two consecutive days off. A part time cashier works four hours a day up to five days a week (with no requirement for consecutive days off). Note that for each unit of cashier requirement below, two part-time cashiers are needed because the periods are eight hours long. Determine the mix of full-time and part-time cashiers and schedule their work in order to minimize total number of cashiers employed but meet the cashier requirements below.

Explanation / Answer

Sector : A small grocery store

Requirement of cashiers during each day of a normal week for day (8 am to 4 pm) and evening (4 pm - 12 am) shifts.

The stre prefers to employ full-time cashiers who work eight hours a day,

Condition

Full Time cashier = 5 days / week, with two consecutive days off.

Part time cashier = Four hours a day & five days a week (with no requirement for consecutive days off).

Note that for each unit of cashier requirement below,

2 part-time cashiers are needed because the periods are eight hours long.

To calculate

Determine the mix of full-time and part-time cashiers and schedule their work in order to minimize total number of cashiers employed but meet the cashier requirements below.

Analysis :

Store works for 7 days in week .

So total working hours = 7 * (8+8) = 112 hrs

As per the condition of

1 ) Part time cashier = 2 cashier in a day * 7 days

Working hours of these part time cashiers = 8 hrs per day * 7 days = 56 hours

2 ) Time for Full time cashiers

Full time cashier = Total time - Part time cashier

= 112 - 56

= 56

Total no of Cashiers required :

1 ) Full time workers for 1 st shift through out the week = 176 working hours

1 cashier works 5 days for 8 hours = 40 working hours.

We have 176 hours.By this calculation we need

Full time workers = 5

2 ) Part time workers for 1 st shift through out the week = 28 working hours

1 cashier works 5 days for 4 hours = 40 working hours.

We have 28 hours.By this calculation we need

Part time workers = 1

3 ) Full time workers for 1 st shift through out the week = 128 working hours

1 cashier works 5 days for 8 hours = 40 working hours.

We have 128 hours.By this calculation we need

Full time workers = 4

4 ) Part time workers for 1 st shift through out the week = 28 working hours

1 cashier works 5 days for 4 hours = 40 working hours.

We have 28 hours.By this calculation we need

Part time workers = 1
