Question

Problem 3: A service process has the following fixed sequence and activities. Time (in minutes) needed for each activity is also shown. The capacity of the process is limited to serve 300 people per day due to space restrictions. Assume 600 service minutes available per day (a) Determine the cycle time for the process design, and the minimum # of work stations (employees) required (b) Assign tasks to each work station using line balancing and the greatest positional weight rule, to achieve the desirable process cycle time: (c) Compute the labor utilization of the process. (d) Find the maximum number of people the process can serve. using 3 work stations/employees, when there is no space limitation. F(0.5)

Explanation / Answer

1. Cycle time = max ( time spent at each station) =1.6

Desired Cycle time = time available / units to be served

= 600 min /200 = 2 min.

2. No. of workstations = sum of times taken for all tasks / desired cycle time

= 5.4 /2 = 2.7 =3 workstations

3. Allocation -

WSI - B,A ( total time =1.9)

WSII - C,D,E,F ( total time =1.7)

WSIII -G,H ( Total time = 1.8)

(c) Efficiency = 5.4 /3x2 = 0.9 = 90%

(d) Maximum people that can be served with 3 workstations = 300 /0.9 = 333
