There has been a lot of debate and research in regard to the different types of personalities that are best suited for teams. Now it is your turn to contribute to the discussion. What types of personalities and attributes do you feel are most effective while working on teams? Use practical experiences as well as scholarly sources to support your answer. Compare and contrast yourself to the ideal personality type that you choose and discuss if you would make a good candidate for working on teams.

In my opinion the best personalities and attributes that are most effective while working on teams include patience, honesty, openness, positive attitude, sharing mentality and flexibility. There would be tough situations to face while working in a team and being patient would help us to overcome the stressful situations without affecting the team performance and also to outperform other team members. Honesty is very important for a team member to ensure good relationship with others in the team. Being honest would help to gain the trust from others and work effectively in a group. Openness is also very important for an effective team member and the member should express the issues and concerns openly to solve them effectively by discussing with other members of the team. A positive attitude is essential to motivate other members of the team and other members would love and respect the members with positive attitude. There would be situations where we need to share others work load because the team success depends on the total work assigned to the team and not on individual work performance. Hence sharing mentality is essential for effective team member and it would help to complete the work earlier than expected. There would be diverse team members in a team with difference in character and culture. To be effective, the team member should be flexible to these differences and should be able to treat every team members in a similar way. I have worked in a team of 12 members and found these attributes in my colleague who was an effective team player and became the team lead in a very short time. His attributes helped him to be accepted by everyone in the team irrespective of the diversity. In my opinion the ideal personality should be supportive, empathetic, cheering, flexible, honest and open. When I compare myself with the ideal personality type, I lack flexibility because it is difficult for me to interact freely with members who are different from me in diversity factors like culture and language. I lack openness also because sometimes I try to hide my issues and weakness from others which is also not good for an effective member. I need to overcome these two defects to become a good candidate for working in teams.
