Question
Authority is the right to perform or command. It allows its holder to act in certain designated ways and to directly influence the actions of others through orders.
It also allows its holder to allocate the organization’s resources to achieve organizational objectives.
3 main types of authority can exist within an organization:
Line Authority
Staff Authority
Functional Authority
Do you possess one of the above in your current position at your organization? If so, which one?
Give an example of one of the above authorities that you experience at your organization.
Explanation / Answer
1) Yes, I possess a staff authority position i.e. a legal advisor in my organization.
Staff authority mainly provides suggestion regarding the financial matters such as budgeting, pricing, financial decisions etc. to the company's other personnel. Their main aim is to give an outline suggestion to the management personnel and not goes deep inside the issue.
My job in the company is to give legal support and advice to the personal who needs them. Also I have to take responsibility for any legal issue and try to give a structural solution for it. Sometimes I may have to do legal research by utilising the available resources and also to find a legal information from it.
2) In my company, I have experienced other Authorities but as I am a staff authority so I might give an example of line authority as there is a relationship between the two positions in an organisation.
One of the positions line authority has is the position of plant manager. In my company, the plant manager has to organise the manufacturing process which occurs in a day to day process. The manager maintains a relationship with the employees in our organization and makes sure every employee participates in the process to make it smooth, fluent and safe. He also keeps up to date the production schedule and hires and train employees according to the needs of our company.
Hope this helps :)
