Question
Team Leadership and Conflict Assume you are a team leader of a diverse group of opinionated department heads and you need to accomplish a major task such as developing a consistent performance appraisal system. Describe how you will lead the team through the stages of team development. Can you avoid conflict altogether or is it a natural phase of team development? Discuss what you can do as a leader both proactively and reactively to address conflict management while accomplishing your goal. Cite any relevant sources in APA formatExplanation / Answer
Forming stage of team development lasts for some time, as persons begin functioning together, getting to know one another & their responsibilities. After some time, the team steps into the storming stage. Th members begin to push against the boundaries formed in the forming phase. In this phase several teams fail.
Storming stage is an inalienable phase of the overall team experience. It normally begins if there is a conflict among the team members’ inherent working approaches. Each one has their own working style, & the success of the team is dependent on an appropriate communication & readiness to compromise. However, if distinct working approaches lead to unforeseen issues, they may become discouraged/ perturbed. The leader must sense these negative trends & effectively manage the conflicts.
Responsibility of the leader-lessen the tension in his team, manage the conflicts, remain committed to the team objective & lead by example. If matters turn worse & conflicts become a usual phenomenon, conduct a feedback exercise / a hot chair session using the expertise of an external moderator.
This phase needs the maximum of the leader’s involvement/ attention.
