Question
Advances in Early Detection and Warning
On March 11, 2011, a massive earthquake occurred off the coast of Japan. Scientists at the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) analyzing seismic information and running sophisticated models were able to determine the likely impact area of the tsunami racing toward the shore. The information was used to alert residents in low-lying areas to evacuate to higher ground. Many more people in northeastern Japan would have lost their lives without the early detection and warning system used by the scientists.
Emergency managers must continually educate themselves about emerging technologies. For this Discussion, consider how emerging technologies, such as emergency alert systems and risk-modeling techniques, can be used to save lives and reduce damages.
Post a brief description of a risk modeling technique used in risk assessment. Applying this risk modeling technique to a specific type of event, explain which data would be most important for an effective risk assessment using this model and why.
Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources and the current literature.
