Explanation / Answer
Purpose and background
The article was written by Jennifer Ann Hill of University of British Columbia, Canada. Technology has been praised for advancement of education through computers and electronics. However, media technology has also been negatively affecting children by retarding their physical and emotional development. A culture of consumerism where the young children and teens are continuously being subjected to a barrage of media messages encouraging them to follow trends and buy more is an important reason for these negative effects.
Research methodology
The research tries to analyse data on the amount spent in marketing and branding to children. Then the health of children is guaged by the trends of physical and psychological functioning of children so as to analyse the serious impacts of consumerism culture. Increase in the number of overweight chldren, suicides among teens, alcoholism etc are studied. Then how the time spent by children n watching television and continuously being exposed to advertisements is examined. In addition how the play time of children is reducing and how non-commercial space is decreasing iis indicated. How children are being exposed to branding, selling and consumerism and how it is affecting their identity is also analyssed. In addition, recent research on negative impacts of consumerism on children is also analysed in the article.
Findings and significance
Children are losing their childhood because of consumerism culture and encroachment of media into every aspect of their lives. Corporate interests and onslaught of advertisements has been eroding their sense of identity. Because of the consumerism culture, the attitudes and behavior of children are slowly becoming similar to adults. Marketers have invaded the minds of children in the name of empowerment and choice. Branded identities can partly explain why children and adults are unable to detect the impact of consumerism on them. It is time for a concerted effort to reduce the negative impacts on children by raising voice against this consumerism culture.
