Here are just 3 that reoccured far to often: 1.) the card reader wouldn't function correctly 2.) the ice cream machine was always down 3.) we ran out of products with no backups
Explanation / Answer
A business problem statement is usually a short concise statement of a problem and its proposed solution.
Expressing a business problem as statement always provides a better clarity on what the company is facing currently and may have statistical data for further quantifying the reality. The statistical data might be how much the company is losing in revenue or how long the customer wait time has increased, etc
Now let us consider the card reader wouldn't function properly. A good problem statement describing this might be as follows:
Upon reviewing the delay in the customer wait times while check out it was observed that card readers were mostly to blame as they would crash if more than 5 orders were processed in a minute. The customer wait time increased by 40% on average.
Business problem question: Why is the problem occuring?
The question will always try to arrive at the root cause of the problem and try to find a feasible solution.
Statement of purpose:It is the statement that addresses the goals and the purpose of the project that is being taken up.
For the above ex: The statement of purpose: To arrive at a solution for the frequent card reader malfunction so as to reduce customer wait time to 10 minutes as compared to 16 minutes either through technological upgrade or training existing staff for better use of resources.
Hope the above example will guide you to better your answer.
