I'm really interested in what you think of Victoria Woodhull? Was her involvement with NWSA positive and negative, and how so in your opinion? I'm also interested in how you might compare someone like Woodhull with someone like Margaret Sanger. Unlike many of the earlier first wave feminists, who focused primarily on suffrage, these women seemed to identify much more complex issues--sexuality, reproductive freedom--that sprang from cultural ideologies about women. While all feminists were roundly vilified, why do you think women like Sanger and Woodhull elicited such passionate and angry responses from mainstream America?

Victoria Woodhull is women's rights activist and first female candidate for the presidency of the United States. By giving ardent speeches on woman suffrage, Woodhull became notable before the Judiciary Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives, and ultimately won the acceptance by woman suffrage leaders. That is how, her activist and leader reputation invited her to NWSA and slowly she became an accomplished public speaker and subsequently was nominated for the presidency by the equal rights party.

Margaret Sanger on the other hand was a social reformer, and American birth control activist. Sanger founded the American Birth Control League, which later became the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. She is regarded as the founder of modern birth control movement.

Both Woodhull and Sanger garnered a national reputation as women activists who dealt with complex as well as sensitive issues of the nation. Woodhull was the first women to promote eugenics throughout the nation. (Eugenics is sexual reproduction among people with desired traits. It is the selection of desired heritable characteristics in order to improve future generations).

Woodhull advocated positive eugenics. She was the first person to promote eugenics, calling for a humanitarian government that would create a perfected humanity by breeding perfect children. Whereas, Sanger was advocating on birth control. She proclaimed that each woman should be an absolute mistress of her own body. She initiated planned parenthood in the country. Although both had different motives, they still fought for the well being of the women with respect to breeding for the future generations.

Women like Sanger and Woodhull elicited passionate responses from the people of similar mindset, whose voice was suppressed by the society in the name of culture. They have even garnered negative and angry responses from all those who were more concerned about the traditions and culture. They were not ready to accept the new change, especially when a women is involved in bring about the change.
