Competitors allege that in important developing markets such as Turkey, Philip Morris has created special tobacco blends containing additives that give brands such as Marlboro an extra "kick." Management is "adapting" rather than "standardizing" its products. Assuming this is true, is this an ethical policy? Standardization of a product is a general practice of setting identical characteristics for a particular good or service. In the other words, it follows a standardized approach such as a “one size fits all” type of an approach. Whereas in product adaptation, special changes and modifications are made based on the type of the market. However, adaptation is not good for all the products.
Tobacco industry works on certain restrictions. It carries a tag which says, "Smoking kills","tobacco kills" and certain normative guidelines. Yet, tobacco consumers make it easier for the companies to market the product by creating a unique demand in the market. Therefore, companies try to keep their consumers happy by adapting new formula that can give an extra kick. This will not only ensure that company tries to addict its consumers but also increasing the mortality rate on a larger scale.
Therefore by assuming that the management is adapting the products instead of standardiing the product, i would say it is unethical as per the norms of the society. The social responsibility towards the society is the natural consequence of ethical behavior. In order to be appealing to the society, adaptation is not the only solution. Instead, management should achieve acknowledgement of success and good practice, by relying on the ethical norms of the society.
Hence, i would suggest, management should standardize all its products. Because, by adapting new formula that brings in more "kick" to the consumers, it is only creating more harm to the smokers, their families and ultimately the society.
