Question

what should khalid do and why explain your reasoning please..

Khalid is very content with his job at the hotel, which is one location of a well-known upscale international hotel chain. He has been working at the hotel, in an urban area situated on river, for almost a year, and he is earning enough money to cover much of his college tuition. He also has a good relationship with his colleagues and supervisors. Khalid got the initial job interview through a friend who was working there, and he feels very grateful to everyone who helped him get the job. After six months on the job, he got a small promotion and pay raise, and he was responsible for reservations, customer service and training new employees in these areas, including two interns who go to the same college as Khalid. One day after a stressful encounter with a hotel guest, Khalid goes for a walk outside to get some air. He notices a falcon flying towards a nest under the highway overpass and the swaying tall green reeds that line the river in the marsh in the background. As he is thinking how tranquil it is out here along the river, he senses a very bad smell and walks around closer to the water. There is black ooze running into the river, and he follows it back around to find the source of the foul-smelling liquid, a hose leading up to a deep pit with a grate on top of it. By now, the smel is so bad that he can't take it much longer, but he wondered what was causin the odor and why there was a hose running out of the nearby hole in the ground. His immediate plan was to go tell his supervisor what he has found, but then he has second thoughts. He wonders if some employees at the hotel were in fact responsible for the situation, and thinks twice about being the one to inform everyone. But Khalid realized what he had found was raw sewage from the hotel bathrooms draining into the river, which is a serious environmental violation. Khalid is torn between his social and legal obligation on one hand and his loyalty to his company and co-workers and his fear of losing a job, which he desperately needs to pay the bills. What should Khalid do? 1. Consider the different stakeholders who are going to be affected by Khalid's decision and discuss the competing interests of each of the different stakeholder groups. 2. Should Khalid go directly to his supervisor and speak to him in person? Should he write an anonymous letter to the President of the hotel? Should he ignore the problem and let someone else figure it out and deal with it? What are the pros and cons of different alternmatives he can take? 3. Apply the Kohlberg's stages of moral development to Khalid's ethical dilemma and describe how an individual at the different stages of development would be motivated in this situation. 4. Describe the risks associated with being a Whistleblower and the ethical obligation employees and individuals consider when confronted with an obvious ethical violation on the job mu

Explanation / Answer

(1).Stakeholder:

A stakeholder is someone who is involved in a project or has a vested interest in its success or failure. Knowing who the stakeholders are is important and the process begins by developing healthy relationships. They help decide on issues from the beginning, during the planning and at the execution of the project. Therefore, stakeholders should understand how the project functions, including the project scope, milestones and goals.

There are five major types of stakeholders:

Among the stakeholders, we have both internal and external classifications. Internal stakeholders are those directly affected by the project, such as employees. External stakeholders are not a part of the business, such as vendors or suppliers, but have an interest in its outcome.

Well, now coming to the Khalids issue, the decision taken by him may affect all the stakeholders because the company has its own trust from internal as well as from the external stakeholders i.e; people. So, when someone gets to know about a fault thing happening to their company will make them lose their trust on it and starts thinking in a negative way. Internal stakeholders like project manager, project team etc can take the problem in a small way and try to fix it. While coming to the external stakeholders like sponsors and customer, will gradually come down and change their opinions on the company. As the problem which Khalid has noticed is fixable, the company and the stakeholders should take an initiative in solving the problem which would help the causing more problem.

(2).Khalid's action towards the problem:

1.Yes. khalid should firstly take a step to consult his supervisor and tell him all about the issue happening. This step is more important because if a person informs to his/her superior like supervisors etc can make a problem solve upto a certain point. If Khalid directly goes and discuss the problem to a roject team or manager can causekhalid a false impression as this is a sensitive case, stepd should be taken carefully and should be solved step by step.so instead of speaking directly to the manager, khalid should approach to his supervisor and discuss the issue.

2.Yes.writing a letter would help the issue solve in an indirect way. khalid can write a letter describing the whole issue happinh. Here the supervisor decision is more important. The supervisor himself will take a decision that if khaidshould stay way from the issue or should he directly interact in it. Here khaid can write a letter without being directly exposed, such as writing the letter without mentioning his name in it and only projecting the problem he saw.this will make a manager more take the issue more confidential as a letter came from an unknown person and he/she will not take any risk in discussing more about the problem and take immediate action in solving the problem as fast as possible.

3.No.khalid should not leave the problem as it is. Being a worker in the company he as to do his work and help the company grow in the business field. When comoing to the other side, khalid is a common man who should also think of his country.not even ythe whole country but atleast his surroundings.so the decission taken by him should be clear and true as he is a honest and esponsible person.

(3).Kohlberg’s Stages of Moral Development:

(4).Consequences faced by a whistleblower:

Legal Consequences

While speaking up about illegal activity is a noble thing to do, it’s also possible for whistleblowers to be caught up in the punishment that comes with the crime. Often, they’ll have to face charges of their own for being part of the crime in the first place, which can make them even more reluctant to stand up and say something (even though blowing the whistle may result in a lighter sentence).

Professional Violations

In many cases being a whistleblower may violate a contract or a professional obligation. In these instances, there may be additional penalties such as civil suits for breaching agreements and confidences.
