Question
You send an email to a co-worker from your work computer. In the email, you complained in length about a customer that you had been interacting with. Once you push send, whose property is that email? Who is responsible for the context of the email if it is offensive to a coworker who receives the email – you, or your company? What if the email is not offensive to the recipient coworker, but is seen by the customer that you were complaining about? Who is responsible for the context of the email then? You who sent the email, or your business? Are your emails private?
Explanation / Answer
In such a case, once I push send that email is the property of the business, as it will be in its server till it delivered to the co-worker. And, if it is offensive to the co-worker who received the email., it will be the sender i.e me who would be responsible for the context as it was me who sent the email in my individual capacity. If the email is not offensive to the recipient coworker, but is seen by the customer that I was complaining about, it would be me who would be responsible for the context of the email as I have sent it without any approval or consult with the management and shared my personal views and experience about that customer in that email. If I am using my company’s official email id, then my emails are not private and it can be monitored by my company at any point in time, as I will be representing them.
