the benefits and purpose behind a decentralized organizational structure. While on the surface, this form and approach to structure seem very relevant in today's society, it does not always succeed. One of the cultural implications of decentralized organizations is creative deviance.
What are the dangers of an approach that encourages creative deviance? After discussing the dangers of this model, provide an example of a company where creative deviance would be appropriate and support your answer with an explanation as to why this style may be fitting for that particular type of company and industry.
Explanation / Answer
Creative deviance makes the people depart from behavioral expectations to pursue their own ideas. It may help to innovate, but there can be some dangers also by disobeying the rules. In a decentralized organization, there would be shared authority and responsibility and hence group cohesion and cooperation is very important for the success of the model. But creative deviance may lead to false authority for some of the employees and they may act like they have superior power. It may affect the work environment and lead to dissatisfaction for other employees. There is less control in a decentralized structure and when it is coupled with creative deviance, it will lead to lack of control and more conflicts. It may also affect the goals set by the organization and its values when the employees act according to their own ideas without giving importance to organization’s vision.
A company where creative deviance would be appropriate includes the software product companies like Apple. Creative deviance is suitable here because these companies work in areas where frequent innovation is required to become successful. Employees would be able to develop new innovations through their ideas and the highly efficient management has the ability to ensure that things are under their control and the employees adopt creativity deviance without affecting the morality and culture of the organization. Creative deviance becomes a danger when the employees forget the organizational values. Steve Jobs had encouraged innovation in Apple by giving more responsibility for the team members but had the ability to ensure that the freedom does not affect the goals set. The level of centralization in Apple and other companies in software development field help to ensure proper control and make creative deviance more suitable limiting the dangers.
