Question

Most developed economies have some illegal immigrants. The United States has the largest number with 12 million. Without legal U.S. identification (ID) documents, they cannot open bank accounts or buy houses. Many U.S. firms have targeted this population, accepting the ID issued by their native countries (or counterfeit ID) and selling them products and services. Some Americans are furious with these business practices. Additionally, illegal immigrants cost the U.S. government billions of US dollars (USD) each year in free services such as education, food stamps, low-cost or free medical care, welfare, crime, etc. Also, using fake ID, many illegal immigrants take jobs when unemployment is around 10 % in the US, making it more difficult for some unemployed citizens to obtain jobs. Some other nations are beginning to tighten restrictions on illegal immigrants entering their countries due to increasing costs. Other Americans suggest that illegal immigrants represent a growth engine in an economy with relatively little growth elsewhere.

How would you participate in this debate?

Explanation / Answer

i would point out the flaws in the argument that these illegal immigrants represent a growth engine. a population influx is not indicative of growth especially when everything is "off the books" in terms of wages and taxes but still a public liability in terms of using public resources (like wear and tear on roads for one) as well as social programs like medicaid, welfare, etc. in some states, if an illegal immigrant wins the state lottery they are able to accept the full payout WITHOUT appropriate taxes. this is not a growth, this is a leach. point to statistics and studies that support your argument in other countries that have higher rates of immigration (like in eastern/western europe). you will find strained economies and loose semblances of order. illegal immigration is not supporting our economy - it is supporting the illegal immigrants personal economy and the country that they could possibly export the earnings/resources back to. since there is no regulation - there is no way to predict the full extent of this damage.
