1985. During that time, the product was available only in New England. By
1988, sales had soared to $10 million. This attracted the attention of Frito-Lay.
The snack-food giant bought Smartfood in 1989 for $15 million. Since the
purchase, Frito-Lay has not tampered with the popular Smartfood formula. It
has used its marketing expertise to keep sales growing, despite the growing
