Explanation / Answer
Of the environmental pressures for change (fashion, mandated, geopolitical, market decline, hypercompetition, reputation and credibility), which one(s) was/were experienced by Intel, and what facts from the case support your choice(s)?
Intel had experienced geopolitical pressures after the September 11 attack in the USA. Further, there was a imminent threat of Iraq war.
The geopolitical pressure also caused a decline in Intel's market share.
Intel also witnessed change in competition. It faced competitive heat from Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). The chips that were made by AMD were more effective and met the consumer's need of fast modern connection. Thus Intel also witnessed change in consumer's fashion and requirement. This also lead to Intel's fall in reputation and credibility. AMD gained at the expense of Intel.
Of the internal pressures for change (growth, integration, collaboration, reestablishment of organizational identities, new broom, and power and political pressures), which one(s) was/were experienced at Intel, and what facts from the case support your choice(s)?
The internal pressures were created as a result of changes introduced by Barret. Barret helped Intel foray into information and communication appliance and services related to Internet. The internal systems were restructured so as to avoid duplication. Organizational structure was changed to create a decentralized unit.
The changes as mentioned above pushed Intel outside its comfort zone and created internal pressure. Reestablishment of organizational identities were experienced by Intel. As mentioned, new units were created to flatten and decentralize the organization.
Integration and collaboration pressures were felt by Intel due to the structural changes introduced at Intel
Are there limits to the changes that can be accomplished at Intel? Why or why not?
Describe why it is important for change managers to have a clear, personal understanding about the pressures that lead to change.
The chages are limited by the limited presence of resources. It takes substantial resources in terms of time, money and manpower skills to introduce and implement change. The quantum of change being introduced and implemented at Intel is limited by its availability of resources. Its resources are finite, putting a limit to Intel's change capacity.
Change results in an organization getting out of its comfort zone. It results in certain initial ambiguity and uncertainity. Thus, managers should have a clear understanding about the pressures related to change. It will help them better implement the change related policies, do a better job at integration and collaboration of different divisions and units.
(Note i was not able to answer in 750 words as the case link given in the question is not that of Intel but of "transformation at IRS". The intel case is not freely available on the net and my answers got limited by this fact.)
