Question
For this assignment, select any one of the case studies presented in Chapter 17 of your textbook. Conduct a thorough case study analysis of the case, following the guidelines presented at the beginning of Chapter 17 (for our online course, you will be completing this analysis individually, not on a team). And then prepare a case study write-up as described in your textbook, including a background statement, major problems and secondary issues, your role, organizational strengths and weaknesses, alternatives and recommended solutions, and evaluation. Save your write-up as "WK6_CaseStudyAnalysisWriteUp-FLast" (First initial, Last name) and then submit it to the Dropbox. Dr. OConnor was known for his hot temper and drinking. Although he claimed never to come to work under the influence, nurses, physicians, and other coworkers had their doubts, and several expressed their alarm to their supervisors. The emergency room needed coverage, and it was hard to find physicians who would work the graveyard shift, so little was done to address these concerns. One night, Dr. OConnor walked across a clearly marked wet floor that the custodian had just mopped. When the angry janitor protested loudly and pointed to the bright yellow sign and the offending footprints, Dr. OConnor took a swing at the other man and a fistfight ensued. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. What should the hospital do to deal with the good doctor? Who should handle this? 2. What role, if any, did the janitor play in this incident? What could he have done differently? 3. Where should Dr. OConnor be referredanger management, Alcoholics Anonymous, psychiatric evaluation? Provide a rationale for your response. 4. How can this incident be turned into a teachable moment for the staff, physicians, and others? 5. How could this have been prevented? Sharon B. Buchbinder and Dale Buchbinder
Explanation / Answer
The hospital needed to address the issue when the other doctors reported, they should had made Dr. O`connor take a test to check if he was under the influences when he was looking suspicious, the general manager of the hospital was the one who should handle this
He was only doing his work, however he didn’t have to protest loudly or get angry at the situation, instead he could have told O`connor to please be careful next time
He sould be refereed to both anger management and alcoholic anonymous because it is obvious he has a drinking problem and when he drinks he gets anger, he has 2 problems but the main one seems to be the drinking which triggers the angry
This should be include in a presentation telling all the staff the repercussions of drinking specially in a doctor and how Dr O`conner probably lose his job because of this.
The staff at the hospital knew about his condition and choose not to do anything because they didn’t have doctors for the graveyard. I am sure there are thousands of doctors who are looking for a job, they should have hire a couple of doctors and send O`conner to a clinic so he could cure his diseases
