Hallmark has sent you to Thailand to start a manufacturing operation. The 10 pieces of equipment you need to start just arrived at customs. When you go to the custom area you notice a 2 star Thailand General inspecting your equipment. You say -good morning. The General looks at you and says that for $10,000 cash your equipment will clear customs immediately. You say - no way will you pay this bribe. The General picks up a sledge hammer and destroys 1 piece of your equipment. Each piece is worth $100,000. What are you going to do? A clue-the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.
Explanation / Answer
As per the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, you are not supposed to pay bribe to foreign government officials. It is unlawful. This provision of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act is applicable to all US citizens.
You may report the incident to the criminal division of the U.S. Department of Justice on an immediate basis. Mark a copy of your fax, or email to the US Consulate in Thailand as well so that prompt and immediate action can be taken.
The violation will have to be reported to FCPA.Fraud@usdoj.gov and the US government will take further action.
