“Look at Your Everyday Object”

1) Have someone you know select an object (nothing sharp!) and put it into a bag, without you knowing what it is. 2) Look on pages 28-29 of your Mayfield text. Complete Step 1 (not exchanging your bag of course) of the Alternate Core Discovery exercise, taking notes as you go along. This is an exercise in gaining information about an object through your senses. Note that this will take about 15 minutes to explore the item without looking, and then 15 minutes to explore the item with your eyes open. 3) Write a description of the process your mind went through collecting data, seeing patterns, and drawing conclusions, answering the following questions: How did you "sense" the object? How did you "perceive" the object? How did you "think" about the object? (See pages 29-31 for clarity on these three terms).

Alternate Core Discovery Writing Applicatiorn Observing the Unfamiliar: A Tool Bring to class some household tool whose function may be unfamiliar or difficult for most people to identify. This could be a cooking implement, a highly specialized tool for some craft, a cosmetic tool, or any interesting item from your kitchen drawer or tool chest. Do not select anything that has sharp points or blades. Carry this object to class in a paper sack so that no one else can see it. Do not discuss with anyone else what you have brought. tep 1 The instructor will ask you to exchange your bag with someone else. Sitting at your desk with your eyes closed, put the bag on your lap under your desk and take the object out of the bag quietly. Spend at least fifteen minutes exploring your subject with your hands, getting to know its shape and texture by touch. Set aside your concerns about how to label it. Your perceiving mind will want to categorize it immediately according to some mental stereotype. "Oh," it will say, "that is just a can opener. All can openers are the same. I know what this looks like already." When this happens, just notice what your mind is doing and go on exploring the object as though you were a child, enjoying its touch, its smell, temperature, and taste (if you dare!). Remember, this is not a guessing game whose purpose is to label an object, but an exercise in gaining

Explanation / Answer

1. I used my senses of touch and feel to establish the process of critical thinking. I started reasoning and making judgmenets about what the object could be. I started reasoning in my mind in order to make a decision about the object. I sensed the object through my faculty of touch and a perception was developed about the object. I had formed a vague notion about the object, though i was not very clear about it. I was thinking of a cheese grater. I also used my creative thinking skill to reason and form a notion about the object.

2. After seeing the object or the tool, my sense of visual perception and sense of sight comes into play. I now start reasoning in my mind about the possible uses of the object so as to establish its identity. From the number of small holes at top, i reasoned that it was a grater of some sorts.

3. I felt a metal object with lots of tiny holes at the top. This was when i had not seen the object. My critical thinking process started and i started reasoning and analysing about the shape of the object, its size, its possible uses etc. I came to a conslusion that it was some type of grater.

The object was a box with a circular lid and a hexagon shaped bottom.

My initial feelings were full of anxiety as i was trying to determine the object. As i was not able to reach a conclusion, i started my critical and craetive thinking to identify the possible uses of object, bases on its shape, structure, size etc. When i narrowed down the use to grating i was relieved and happy.

I was anxious initially, but calmed down gradually. I never got frustrated as i knew this will limit me reasoning capability.
