Question

You have been asked to determine how long a project will take to be completed. This project consists of 11 tasks of varying time durations (measured in days) that must all be completed. Unfortunately, not all tasks. can be done at the same time (although some can be done in parallel); certain predecessor tasks must be completed before others can be started. The table below gives the duration and predecessors for each task. Thus, for example, task J cannot begin before each of tasks F, G, and H are completed. How quickly can this entire project be completed?

Explanation / Answer

The quickest this project can be completed will be in 33 days.

Activities A and B will take 5 days in total and then activity C, D, E can be started at the same time.

Activity I needs activties C and F to be completed. Completion of C will take 5 days however, completion of F will take D + F = 7 + 4 = 11 days. Therefore activity I can be started with 11 days from activity B.

Activity J needs activities F, G and H to be completed. Activities G and H can be completed in E + H = 9 days

Activities G and H can be completed simultaneously as activity F is completed in 11 days.

Activity K can be started once activities I and J are completed. I and J need maximum 8 days to complete as activity J has to wait for activity I to be completed and activity K to be started.

Activity K takes 9 days to complete.

Hence the total time taken for the project to completed = 2+3+11+8+9 = 33 days.
