Question

The purpose of this laboratory is to illustrate the principles of Hardy Weinberg equilibrium. The basis of evolution is the changing of gene frequencies from one generation to the next. Hardy Weinberg equilibrium represents a theoretical situation in which gene frequencies do not change from one generation to the next, given that there is no mutation, no migration into or out of the population, no genetic drift, no natural selection and no nonrandom mating. We have talked about all of these forces to one extent or another. We are able to set up an experiment where mating is completely at random, there is no natural selection, no mutation, and no migration in or out of the population. The fate of individuals and the pairing of mates will be done using random numbers (see the next paragraph). Essentially we are eliminating all of the above factors except for genetic drift, which is the idea of chance.

What are random numbers? Essentially, if you wrote the numbers 1 through 100 on pieces of paper and put them in a box and drew them out one at a time blindly, you would have random numbers. There are computer programs that will generate random numbers for us, so that we don
