Question

Predefined Project Schedule

A major utility company has a Project Management Office (PMO). The office reviews all the projects submitted by the various business organizations and selects the projects to be completed. With inputs from the business partners, they prepare the budgets and determine the time period for the projects. You are assigned as a project manager on one of the projects. You find out that your project should have started last month in order to meet the completion date.

What can you do about this as the project manager?

Should you delay the start of the project to re-plan the work?

Can you delay the project?

Provide a rationale in support of your answer.

Explanation / Answer

1) As a project manager I can first calculate the early start, early finish , latest start and latest finish times of the project activities. Then I will calculate the total slack of each activity.

2) If the total slack is within tolerable limits and the project can still be completed on time even after one month delay in the start of the project, then I will expedite the process to begin the start of the project without doing any rework .

3) The delay of the project depends on the total slack of the project activities. If enough slack is available then the project can be delayed.
