Assuming we need 35 assemblies per day and there is one 8-hour shift per day, calculate:
a) The Required Cycle Time
b) Minimum number of Work Stations required (Work Cells) to accomplish the above assembly production rate.
Suppose after the tasks are grouped in to the required number of work cells, the actual cycle time was 12.5 minutes. With this actual cycle time
c) How many assemblies could be produced?
d) If one of work cells consist of tasks D and E, what would be the efficiency of this work cell?

Explanation / Answer
Total Time =
=36.5
a)Cycle time= 8*60/35=13.7 Minutes (Available Hr*60/reqd assemblies)
b)Min. number of Workstation = Total Time/ Cycle time= 36.5/13.7=2.66==3 workstations
c) the activities can be grouped in 3 workstations and actual cycle time comes out to be 12.5 minutes
hence number of assemblies which can be produced= 8*60/12.5=38.4= 38 assemblies
d) Overall efficiency= total time /( workstations* Cycle time)= 36.5/(3*12.5)=0.9733===97.33%
efficiency for D&E in a single cell= 11.5/12.5=0.92==92%
probable workstation combinations
WS 1 A-B-C =12.5 mins
WS2 D-E= 11.5 mins
WS3 F-G-H=12.5 mins
