Explanation / Answer
a. In this case the manager is located in a place that is different from the location of the business. As the manager is not physically present, he/she should have the following characteristics - (i) the manager should be a clear communicator - as the manager is not physically present, he or she will have to absorb the workplace situation through effective communication. (ii) secondly, the manager should have a dedication to the cause and ensure that his dedication is shared by his team members.
Now, as the manager telecommunicates each day, communication plays a vital role. The manager should be a good listener. He should understand clearly what the others are trying to say. He should absorb their messages and emotions. He should then add his inputs and ideas. He should communicate and share his visions, goals and objectives clearly with his team members.
b. In this case, the manager is physically present at the work place. The manager has to display the following traits to be effective - (i) determination and the ability to make rational decisions - the manager should be firm, resolute and full of purpose. His thinking should be clear and rational. (ii) the manager should be a visionary and help the team members and the organization to visualize the future and develop a plan to reach there.
As the manager is physically present, he or she will have to use communication as a tool to motivate his team members. The manager will have to pay equal attention to both verbal as well well as non verbal communication. Verbal communication will include listening and speaking and both have to be effective. As the manager is physically present, non verbal communications like having a positive body language is also very important.
c. In this case, the manager is present for some days in the week and is in a different location for the balance days in the week. The manager will have to lay down clear objectives and strategic plans that will help in achieving those objectives.
Communication will play a vital role here as well. The manager should ensure that he or she picks up all the nuances and developments at the work place. This can only be possible if the manager uses effective communication as a tool to not only gather information but also to disseminate information.
