Explanation / Answer
TITLE: Asthma - Its main causes and how it can be prevented.
1. Asthma is a disease and it affects the lungs of a person. Asthma results in the following - chest tightness, breathlessness, coughing that can occur at nighttime as well as during early morning and wheezing.
2. Air pollution triggers asthma attacks (although it is not the only cause of asthma). So, although air pollution may not cause asthma (the issue is still being researched), it is a proven fact that asthma attacks can be triggered by high levels of air pollution. Air pollution is just one of the causes that can trigger asthma attacks. Other causes are stress, extreme weather conditions, presence of allergens.
3. Asthma can be treated using medicines that are effective to control asthma. The following types of medicines are used - long term control medicines, quick relief medicines and allergy shots. The dosage of medicines varies from person to person depending on the symptoms and the cause of asthma. The medicines helps in expanding the passageways into the lungs, resulting in more air coming in and out of the lungs.
4. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is a US based agency which enforces regulations to protect the environment and human health. EPA can help in preventing and reducing asthma by reducing the amount of pollution, which is one of the triggers. In fact, EPA has researched on the various pollutants found indoors that can possibly trigger an asthma attack. EPA, along with, state and local partners, is building measures to control asthma and manage the exposure of individuals to both indoor as well as outdoor pollutants.
5. Air pollution is a serious issue and needs to be tackled on an urgent basis. As a community health leader, i will start with the causes of air pollution - both human causes as well as natural causes. Main human causes are use of cars, emissions of air toxics, etc. Main natural causes are forest fires, volcanic gases, and ground level ozone. As a community health leader my main focus will be on human causes of air pollution and how we can reduce this form of pollution. People should rely less on fossil fuels and use sources like solar energy. They should use electric cars as they don't cause air pollution. Regulations should be put in place to cap the limit of air toxics that are spewed by industries.
