Explanation / Answer
Establish the context
Our organization needed to hire a candidate which had been vacated by a senior employee who was with the organization since its inception. The post vacated was for a Systems Manager.
Identify the risks
The issue was that since he was a part of the team since the organizations inception he knew about the company in and out. Had helped in building the team. Knew the processes, issues and various aspects and how they need to be handled.
Analyze the risks
If someone was hired externally then people within the team would feel that why were they not given an opportunity to step up. The issue was no one qualified to take up this role.
Moreover, the other risk was that if an external candidate is hired then the team might not co-operate with him and make life difficult for both parties.
Evaluate the risks
However, if that position was not filled it added pressure on the Director Systems Engineering as he would have to get involved with the daily day to day activities which would in turn hurt the business as he would not be involved in strategizing.
Treat the risks
The solution to this was two senior techs were promoted to Team Lead who can be trained to take up the Manager’s position. To train them the Director personally started interacting with them and assign them with specific projects to assess their skills, in the meanwhile he also started interacting with technical staff in the network team from where he could pull people in his team to fill up the vacated position.
After a couple of months one Team Lead proved to be good so he was promoted to be the Manager and one mid - level technician in the network team was shifted to the Systems team so this way he got the Manager of the Systems Team and filled up the role earlier vacated and the position which was vacated by the Team Lead after his promotion got filled up internally which helped as the training time to bring the Network technician will be lesser than hiring someone externally. Hence, cost saving happened and the requirement also got fulfilled.
