Question 3 (20 points) What are the "cons" of using traditional Value Stream Mapping (VSM) in going from a current state of "push" control to re-design of a "future" state "pull" process, and what are the "pros" in using VSM+ Factory Physics principles to change the current process.

Push is a system where the production line push the product to market for sales . This creates huge imbalance between demand and supply. As production keeps on going without realising the market real time changes. Pull system is a much adavnaced startegy where customer demands are directly taken into account and production /services are given based on that. Its areverse strategy to pull.The pull inventory control system begins with a customer's request/order. With this strategy o process, companies only make enough product to fulfill customer's orders.

Cons in using VSM

VSM is a paper and pencil based traditional technique used primarily to document value streams. It comprises of physicall walking along the flow and recording what happens on the floor. This will limit both the level of detail and the number of different versions that we can handle.

Traditional value stream mapping has their onw advantage in not taking minor details inot considerations.Where Pull ssytems required atmost care and micro study to understand the root of demand and supply balance VSM is focusing on process line requirement rather than outward movement (demand). Takt time, cycle team related issues can be addressed easily via VSM. but realtime market fluctuation and how it associated to process related changes cannot be incorporated with tradional VSM techniques.

Pros in using VSM

VSM technique is effective in analysing the As Is (existing) process and to map it on the requirment for the further re designing. So for a change of process from push to pull, it is very much required to analyse the exsiting process well in detail. So VSM helps in mapping and capturing the proces line re;ated observations and data crunching. VSM can be applied to understand the capacity constraints and how it gonna affect when pull system will come into picture. For methods like production development and re design VSM is useful to plan and project the requrement well in advance.VSM focus on valuable, capable, available, flexible,adequate requirement in a process.It support push to pull system change over mechanism to give strategic advise and tactic plans to readjust with the exisitng process at low investment.
