Question
The specifications for a manifold gasket that installs between two engine parts calls for a thickness of 2.500 mm ± .020 mm. The standard deviation of the process is estimated to be 0.004 mm. The process is currently operating at a mean thickness of 2.50 mm. What is the Cp for this process? Is this process capable?
Not enough information
1.67 - capable
0.835 - capable
1.67 - not capable
which is the correct answer?

Explanation / Answer
Hi
Here
USL (Upper specification limit )-2.52 mm
LSL(Lower specification limit) -2.48 mm
SD-0.004
Mean-2.50mm
so now CP =(2.52-2.48)/(6x 0.004)
=1.67
Now process CP =(USL-mean/ 3*std.Dev)
=(2.52-2.50)/3 x 0.004)
=1.67
Solution 2:
=(mean-LSL/3*std.Dev)
=(2.5-2.48)/(3*0.004)
=1.67
so answer 1.67 is CP and answer is 1.67 capable.
