Explanation / Answer

1. Describe several advantages and disadvantages of very cohesive groups and teams.

The advantages of very cohesive group

The disadvantages of very cohesive group

2. Describe a situation in which a cohesive team would be extremely beneficial. Explain why.

If norms for quality, output, and cooperation with outsiders are high, a cohesive group will be more productive and extremely beneficial because that have shared values and team loyalty. The familiarity of team members to each other creates good atmosphere and effective communication. When team work for a common goal, individual team members bring various skills and point of view to the project. Group members with their cooperative behavior help each other for better knowledge and shortage of skill.

3. Describe a situation in which a cohesive team would be a significant handicap. Explain.

If cohesiveness is high and performance norms are low, productivity will be low of the group and this situation will make them significantly handicap in their performance. If high group cohesiveness is there, the group will develop conformity between themselves. His will happens when team members adopt similar behaviors and an attempt to fit in or to reduce disagreements between group members. This set of behaviors will become the group norm and reduce the productivity. And when cohesiveness and performance-related norms are both low then also the productivity tends to fall into the low-to-moderate range as team members show very little co-operation with each other.

4. Suppose you have recently become the leader of a team that is inappropriately cohesive (either very cohesive or not-at-all cohesive) but otherwise has the required skills and experience for the current challenges. How would you deal with the situation? Your team is under great pressure to get this major project accomplished within a year.

If the team members have the required skills and experience for the current challenges and also very cohesive then output and co-operation will be high. And the group will be more productive, they will try their best to finish the project within a year.

If the team members have the required skills and experience for the current challenges and but not cohesive at all then their co-operation with the other team members will be very low and it will affect the output of the team. To make this team more productive, being a team leader you have to encourage the coordination and conflict resolution time to time so that the performance of the team will not suffer. Otherwise the project will not finish on time.
