I am confused on what toanswer for this question, I do know that 1-2 percent of all energythat reaches Earth is actually used by photosyntheticorganism but why is this?

Explain whyonly a fraction of the energy from the sun that reaches thebiosphere is available for use by photosyntheticorganisms? I am confused on what toanswer for this question, I do know that 1-2 percent of all energythat reaches Earth is actually used by photosyntheticorganism but why is this?

Explanation / Answer

Apx 50% of the energy is lost to wavelengths of light that aren'tpart of absoprtion spectrum's pigments (such as green light). Apx30% are lost due to light energy not being absorbed due to plantstructure (such as leaf orientation which doesn't reach the sunwell). Apx 10 percent is lost due to the inefficiency of lightreactions convert light to chemical energy, leaving apx 5%inefficiency from CO2 pathways. Thus less than 5% is usedefficiently in photosynthesis. Hope this helps!
