While it’s not a topic many employees feel comfortable discussing, the issue of drug and alcohol abuse needs to be addressed, according to the manager of your human resources department. She has chosen you to assess what other companies are doing about employees suffering from drug or alcohol abuse. She wants to know what approaches these companies are taking and what programs they offer. She also wants you to recommend a reasonable policy. For this paper, your group would need to evaluate three companies and their drug and alcohol program and then recommend a plan of action for your company.

Policy of Company A - The Company is very intolerant to the employee suffering with the drug and alcohol problem. The human resource department thinks that this habit is very detrimental to the workplace efficiency and working environment. They give the employee a warning and a time of 2 months to get rid of the drug and alcohol problems. If he/she is not able to come out of addiction, he/she is fired immediately.
Policy of Company B - While company A is very intolerant to the drug addiction, company B is tolerant to it and sympathizes with the persons addicted. They have an in house remedial program with a panel of doctors to help people get rid of addiction and become normal again to lead a healthy life. Medical and financial support is also provided and periodic review is done in order to find out the progress of the employee. 15 days of paid leave is also given to the people to recover from their problems.
Policy of Company C - Company C adopts a very different policy where an employee who is suffering from drug addiction is given a unpaid leave of 6 months to recover from his addiction completely. He is recommended to the empaneled hospitals outside and also some help groups for addicted people. The person is checked every month to monitor his progress which is reported to the HR head in order to find out his re-deploybility on the job. Once the person is completely fit, he is deployed again.
