Question
Office in Borneo? You work in international human resources for a large furniture manufacturer. Your company, whose headquarters is in the United States, will soon open a new manufacturing plant in East Kalimantanon on the island of Borneo. Do you hire local staff, and if so, in which positions? Which accommodations, if any, should you make to the corporate culture when planning your policies and procedures for this plant? What types of outreach do you wish to make in the local community? Discuss the issues in a post of at least 200 words
Explanation / Answer
As a HR official for the company, I would hire local staff in Borneo, mostly to lower level in the plant, i.e. the workers, supervisors, lower level managers will mostly be locals. I would avoid hiring locals for higher positions like top management, at least till the plants starts running smoothly and all the policies and procedures are set in place, i.e. have become a part of the working style in the manufacturing facility.
While planning the policies and procedures for this plant, I would not like to make any major accommodations in the corporate culture, as I would like the plant functioning to be aligned to the other manufacturing plants under our company. Being said that, a plant located on Borneo cannot be expected to align itself easily with the corporate culture as in US. Hence, the while defining the policies and procedures for this plant, I would like to keep in mind the lifestyle and working style of my workers, as it will be different than the US workforce. The working timings will be as per or close to the local working hours, the benefits provided to the employees will be aligned to their needs as per their lifestyle in Borneo; also the leaves and holidays will be aligned to the Borneo culture.
I want the local community to identify our plant as a job provider, and working for their benefit. Hence, I would like to hold functions, discussions, and other communication with the local representatives to highlight the benefits the town is getting from the company’s presence there, and what more can we do to help them and how can the town help in company’s growth.
