The glycolysis is the central pathway of breakdown of glucose. It is the sole metabolic process of releasing energy in mammalian tissues and cellslike eryhtrocytes, renal medulla, brain and sperm cells. In these cells the labelled phosphate (31P) and (14C) are used as labelled isotopres. These are uptaken by cells and the glycolyticpathway is tracd in these cells like kidney or RBC or sperm cells in which the labelled C or P appear in compounds or ATP.

The pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) occurs in tissueslike bonemarrow, skin, intestinal mucosa where the pentoses are abundant and are required for the synthesis of RNA and DNA, ATP, CoA, NADH and FADH2. The labelled C and P are fed in these cells and traced during the PPP in either DNA or ATP.

The Citric acid cycle occurs in all cells which uptake O2 and release CO2. Hence the labelled C can be traced in all aerobically respiring cells.
