Question

pick one of the Big Five dimensions of personality (Openness to Experience, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, Extraversion, and Agreeableness) and describe a possible work scenario where an employee who rates high on the dimension you have chosen would be more effective at solving a conflict or problem than an employee who rates low on the dimension. Next, describe a different scenario where an employee rating low on the dimension would be more effective in solving a problem or conflict than an employee rating high on the dimension.

Explanation / Answer

Let us consider Openness to Experience dimension of personality and see how it can be applicable to two different work scenarios.

Let us consider a first work scenario where an organization has to introduce a completely new and innovative product in the market, since the organization has been faring badly in its existing products with respect to its competitors. An employee, a senior manager, has been entrusted with the job of introducing this new and innovative product in the market. Here, a high ‘Openness to Experience’ is required since the employee has to be creative and imaginative. He/she has to do independent and out-of-the-box thinking so that such a product can be envisaged and which will satisfy the latent needs of people and become a success in the market. The employee should have a tendency to think and/or do new things; then only he/she will be successful. However, if the employee has low ‘Openness to Experience’, then he/she will not be very creative and imaginative and will not able to come out with such a type of product.

Let us consider a second work scenario where a Sales Executive has to consistently perform by fulfilling his/her quarterly sales targets. In this case, a low ‘Openness to Experience’ is required. The Sales Executive has to be consistent and practical. Here not much of creativity or imagination is required, since it is more of a routine work. Rather he/she has to be very perseverant and practical-minded. However, if the Sales Executive has high ‘Openness to Experience’, then he/she may be unpredictable in the achievement of sales targets and may not also have the necessary focus.
