This commencement address, which is a type of commemorative speech, was given by David Mccullough Jr. in 2012 at Wellesley High School. Mccullough is a member of the faculty, who teaches English at the high school. He starts his speech by thanking the people who introduced him, the Board of Education, and the graduates and their friends and families in attendance. The basis of his speech centers around his statement that "you are not special". The speech contains several memorable statements, as per the eText. The statement that "you are not special" in itself is quite memorable because it is a brutal reminder of this simple fact that many people forget.
Mccullough begins his speech with saying that commencement is the ceremony everyone looks forward to. He then dismisses weddings as being one-sided and tells the audience that half of them will divorce, based on statistics, but that commencement works every time. He says that no matter what situation you go through or will be in in the future, you will at least have your high school diploma. He then goes into the focus of his speech by saying that everyone wears the same thing and gets the same piece of paper, save for their name, because "you are not special".
Mccullough goes into statistics on how many other high schoolers are graduating at the same time and how many of them have the same shoes. He makes jokes throughout the first half of his speech in order to grab the attention of the high school graduates but then becomes more serious after the 2/3 mark. At that point, he switches to a more serious tone and encourages the graduates to seek knowledge, pursue their dreams, and to not do things just for the sake of scratching it off a list or bragging rights or to "get a leg up" on competition. He ends with saying that doing something for others is the best thing you can do for yourself and will make you realize that "you are not special...because everyone is."
Explanation / Answer
The video is all about telling the importance of education, ceremony, diploma etc. The speaker's intention is to tell how important the carer is in one's life.He initially takes the example of Weddings and creates a humor stating that wedding comes in everyone's life and that is not an achievement in one's life but education is very important and that gives you a good carer and happiness in life. The statement 'you are not special' specifies that everyone is born with qualities and hence no one special in this world. However, if you put efforts to build you carer then you might be special to somebody else.He states that graduation stays with you forever and no one can steal it from you. Also, he states that knowledge should come from learning but not a materialistic one.The speech is all about telling the importance of education and how it helps you in life no matter what the situation is. According to him, there are many students graduating because you re not special. His main focus is to convey the importance of education, carer, knowledge in one's life to full-fill their dreams.
I agree to the speech as education is really important in everyone's life. It is one of the sources through which we can get a job and earn money. It makes our lives easier and makes us to live happy. Also as said in the speech knowledge is something which we need to acquire but it should not be a materialistic one.
