Question

XYZ Corp. is a small manufacturing firm, that has been aroound for 40 years, but just recently had a change in leadership at the HR position. The company is experiencing some growth, based on entry into some new markets, so needs to hire some employees. The new HR leader has a philosophy of hiring two people for the open position, let each work against the other during the 90 day probation period, and then keep the "best" one and let the other person go. The two new employees don't know anything about this situation, both assuming that there is a need for two positions. Are there any moral or ethical considerations to this method of operation? Could this impact future hiring if this practice gets out? What suggestions do your have for changing this practice that can improve the selection process?   HR class

Explanation / Answer

Any company which doesn’t have open hiring norms is bound to fail the future employee’s confidence and existing employee’s loyalty.

Any undisclosed clauses or hidden agendas, which the aspirant is unaware of, makes the method of operation unmoral & unethical. Any person who joins a company, always forgoes other options, offers (how small it may be) etc. before choosing the same. So any unmoral & unethical means used for recruitment will be like betrayal from the organizations, towards the employee. Even if this method is continued, informing the employees in the offer letter about the probations period being part of the selection process, will be good from the organizations part. It also gives the aspirant an opportunity to understand and give his or her best shot during the time frame (knowing the performance will evaluated at the end of period, and will result in in his selection or rejection).

If the unethical hiring process is out in the market (which is definite with time and online reviews), the company will lose its market respect and result in poor standard of applicants and low loyalty from the selected ones.

All recruiters want to get the best resources, but there is always a scope of ethical means by which the best can be hired and retained. Giving all hidden or dependent terms in the offer letter, makes the selection process proper and clear. Having a more rigorous selection process, gives the company to choose the best, in the first step itself.
