You are a quality control manager in an oil refinery in Fujairah. You have discovered that the oil company is dumping waste products from the refining process into the sea. This is against the law, but the company is doing it secret y. You have talked with your boss about it, but he has denied that the company is dumping waster into the sea and has told you to stop prying into this subject, e has also reassigned you to a different part of the company where you are not involved in the oil refining operation. He has threatened that if you insist on digging more into this subject, you will lose your job. Should you go to the government with your evidence of dumping? Should you give your evidence to an Emirati environmental group anonymously? Should you ignore the illegal dumping and go about your business as usual? What are the implications of each option? (Who is affected? How are they affected? What are the possible results?) What do you believe is the best option? Why? Support your decision with ethical arguments.Explanation / Answer
It is our duty as human beings to try and curb any harm that we see is being caused to the environment.
Given the three options in the case, I would go for the second option (This is a personal opinion; I will try to support it with arguments. The thoughts & arguments are in line with general ethics and does not include geographical and political views of a place)
Lets start with the third option - When i know and am sure that what is being done is illegal, ignorance or pretending to ignore is equally or maybe, even more illegal compared to what is being done. Hence this option is ruled out.
For the first option, before we walk up to the government it is important that we be absolutely sure of what is being done and its consequences. It is important and always better to support the claims and thoughts with numercal data. This would require some research on what exactly is being done and the extend of its effect.
Considering all the above, I would feel the second option is the most appropriate wherein a group that specializes in environmental well being understands and takes over. We would definitely help them with all the evidences and facts that we have but they would definitely have a better understanding of the overall process than ourselves.
Having said all these, one thing is for sure that we can definitely not ignore the scene.
