From a sociological perspective, define and distinguish between race and ethnicity?
Race refers to a community of the people who have similar traits like similar facial features, skin color, eye ball color, body type, features etc. People who belong to the same race have distinctive characteristics, there are lot of resemblance between the people. Generally most of the characteristics people have in a race are inherited. So, these traits carry on for generations and this is typically called as a race. For example, all the Anglo Indians are a mix of Indian and British ancestry. So, almost all the Anglo Indians have similar traits and they look similar. Race means, it is an identification of a bigger community.
Ethnicity - Ethnicity refers to cultural heritage of a certain community. It means, there will be certain cultural practices and perspectives which sets apart one group from the other. Ethnicity is based on the group of people with a certain mindset towards the culture. They have distinctively same language, festivals, culture, etc. Ethnicity is not inherited, it is learned. It is inculcated from the elders of the family. It is followed since generations.
