For as the glucose and fructose are being transformed into fatty acids sooo how are these produced from glucose!

a) Acetyl CoA

b) ATP

c) NADPH

After a person consumes large amounts of sucrose, the glucose and fructose that exceed caloric requirements are transformed into fatty acids (for triglyceride synthesis). This synthesis requires three substrates. Briefly indicate how each of the following substances are produced from glucose.

Explanation / Answer

a) Acetyl CoA is produced from pyruvate by the enzymatic reaction catalyzed by pyruvate dehydrogenase complex. The pyruvate is the end product of glycolysis in which glucose is converted to pyruvate.

b) ATPs are produced in glycolysis, TCA cycle, and electron transport chain. Two ATPs are produced in glycolysis, 2 ATP are generated in TCA cycle, and Electron Transport Phosphorylation typically produces 32 ATP's.

c) Conversion of glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate to 1,3-bisphosphoglycerate produces two NADH; production of acetyl CoA from pyruvate produces 2NADHs. TCA cycle produces 6 NADHs.
