when it comes to advantages and disadvantages of using standards, We do use standards in my company to set time standards. There are advantages as well as disadvantages just as you mention. One advantage we have is that we are able to set maximum load amounts for our master scheduling. By doing this they will not allow more production jobs to be scheduled during one week or one month than we can produce. On the other hand there are disadvantages because if there are jobs that are more difficult to build and the production workers will avoid working on that job. They do not want to go over the "time standard".
