In this exercise, please read the mini-case and answer the questions that follow. A large fashion retailer is hiring a new Human Resource Manager for one of its new locations. The Director of Human Resources for the company is going to interview the job candidates. The position requires 5-8 years of experience in a management role, preferably in a Human Resource Department. The experience need not be in the fashion industry, but that would be a bonus. The Human Resource Manager will be responsible for running the entire Human Resource Department at the new location. In addition to his or her own responsibilities, this person's management responsibilities will include motivating employees, resolving conflicts, and overcoming resistance to change. The Director of Human Resources wants to use the most valid form of interviewing. She wants to limit the number of hypothetical answers provided by the applicants. She would like to do whatever it takes to assure that the person who is offered the job has the experience necessary to do the job. Ultimately, she would like to know how each applicant has reacted to similar situations that he or she might experience in this new position. What questions should the organization ask about an employee’s motivation? What questions could be asked about resolving conflict and overcoming resistance? What questions should be avoided? What should be the organization’s interview goals?
Explanation / Answer
The process of recruitment is one of the most critical processes of the organization. Hiring a bad candidate for the company often becomes a bad playoff in future. Therefore hiring managers try to select the best fit for the job and the company.
The potential employee’s motivation level can be checked by asking about why he wants to join this new organization and why does he feel that he can be a fit for this company. The employee must also be asked about the factors which motivate him to perform better and the factors, which act as a negative trigger for his performance.
For knowing about the potential employee’s perspective about resolving conflict at the workplace as well as overcoming resistance, Behavioral events interview can be conducted in which the employee will need to share life incidents that he may have faced in the past. This way the employee’s perspective about such situations and the way he can handle such events can be judged.
